Attorney Joshua E. Williams
Joshua E. Williams is an attorney with Groth & Associates, where he has built his legal career from the ground up. He joined the firm in 2016 as an intern and continued to serve as a criminal defense paralegal and trial specialist while pursuing his education. During law school, he worked as a law clerk for the firm before becoming an attorney and continuing his practice at Groth & Associates.
A Toledo native, Josh attended Roy C. Start High School before enrolling at the University of Toledo. There, he earned both his Associate of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Paralegal Studies, specializing in litigation and trial practice. He then attended the University of Toledo College of Law on a full academic scholarship, where he earned his Juris Doctor.
While in law school, Josh represented the University of Toledo College of Law for two consecutive years in the Ohio Attorney General’s Mock Trial Competition. In 2019, he earned top honors as both Best Attorney and Best Witness, demonstrating the advocacy skills that continue to define his legal career.
Following graduation, Josh became practicing law in Ohio focuses primarily on criminal defense, family law, and personal injury cases, where he is known for his aggressive advocacy and dedication to protecting the rights of his clients.
Beyond his legal practice, Josh has established himself as a leader in public service and criminal justice policy. In 2022, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and currently serves Ohio’s 44th House District. He was elected as the Majority Whip of the Ohio House of Representatives, becoming the first African-American member to hold that leadership position.
As a legislator, Josh has sponsored and championed significant reforms in criminal justice, public safety, parental rights, and government accountability. Josh also serves on the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission, where he works alongside judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and policymakers to review and improve Ohio’s criminal laws and sentencing policies. Additionally, he serves on the Access to Justice Foundation Board, helping expand access to legal services and promote equal justice for underserved Ohioans.
Josh’s journey—from overcoming homelessness and adversity to becoming an attorney, professor, and state legislative leader—has shaped his commitment to service. Whether representing clients in the courtroom or advocating for policy reforms at the Statehouse, he remains dedicated to fighting for justice, protecting constitutional rights, and serving the people of Ohio with integrity and compassion.
