SKILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT CASES

CAR ACCIDENTS CAN OCCUR ANYWHERE AND WHEN THEY DO THE DAMAGES CAN BE SEVERE.

Car accidents happen every day. In 2015, more than 300,000 car accidents were reported in Ohio. In these accidents, 1,110 victims died. Many more suffered injuries that ranged from minor to life-changing.

If you are injured in a car accident, you can suffer an injury or even be killed. Injuries and deaths can saddle victims and their loved ones with significant expenses like

medical bills, funeral and burial costs, lost wages due to taking time off work to recover, and many other smaller expenses like the need for hired domestic help and mobility aids while recovering. For individuals facing these expenses, a personal injury or wrongful death claim can be a way to recover compensation and avoid financial hardship.

WHAT CAUSES CAR ACCIDENTS

Car accidents can have many causes. Sometimes, they are the unlucky result of weather conditions or interactions with wildlife. In other cases, they are due to negligence. When negligence is the cause of an accident, the negligent party is liable for the victim’s damages.

A few examples of acts of driver negligence that can cause car accidents include:

  • Speeding;
  • Driving drunk;
  • Driving distracted; and
  • Disregarding posted traffic instructions like yield signs and stoplights.

Other parties’ negligence can cause car accidents as well. For example, if a vehicle malfunctions and causes its driver or another party to be hurt, the vehicle’s manufacturer, distributor, or seller may be deemed negligent and thus liable for the victim’s damages.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT

If you are involved in a collision with another vehicle, a pedestrian, or a stationary object, pull over immediately – but only if it is safe to do so. Use your judgment and if it would be safer to remain where you are, do that.

Then, call 911 if anybody involved in the accident needs immediate medical attention. Whether this is the case or not, the next step is to call local law enforcement to have an officer sent to the scene.

File an official police report with the officer and do not leave the scene of the accident without a copy.

This will be an important piece of evidence to support your claim if you choose to file one. Other pieces of evidence to collect at the scene include photographs of the accident and contact information for witnesses.

Do not leave the scene without exchanging insurance information with the other drivers involved. You file a personal injury claim, you will file it with the negligent party’s automobile insurance provider.
